Galápagos Islands (Official name: Archipiélago de Colón) consist of 13 main islands, 6 smaller islands, and 107 rocks and islets. They were formed about 5 million years ago as a result of continuous volcanic eruptions and submarine activities. Consequently, it is possible at various places to see lava flows that have become frozen into forms so strange that make you think of the first day of creation. The fauna and flora have been isolated from the rest of the world, thus giving the species a chance to evolve into several different kinds of species (more than 800): Galapagos land iguanas, marine iguana, Galapagos mockingbirds, blue footed and masked boobies, red billed tropic birds, great frigatebirds, finches, waved albatross, sea lions, penguins, flightless cormorants, Galapagos hawks, green sea turtles, giant Galapagos tortoises which gave the islands their name), and others. Varieties of Galapagos Plants: 228 are endemic; approximately 397 are indigenous, while 250 are introduced species.
